Transmediale is an international festival that showcases digital art and culture and this year it is focused on the impact and unavoidable consequences of the pending global transformation—the crossing of a point of no return akin to the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago.
Anna Frants and Cyland Medialab’s project “LIFE – STRUGGLE” is participating in the exhibition “ConcentArt / Sign & Time”, as part of the international festival Transmediale in Berlin.
Anna Frants: “Life – Struggle”
Curator: Georgy Begun
Programming: Sergey Komarov
In collaboration with CYLAND Media Lab, 2009.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Our entire life is a struggle. This can manifest as a simple fight in a boxing ring or as the struggle for daily bread (or vegetables) during Soviet times. Back then, after waiting in an endless line at the grocery store to the upbeat tunes playing from a loudspeaker, customers would often be shortchanged by outdated, grimy scales with rusty weights.
In this installation, the viewer is given the opportunity to take control of the situation—by shifting the weights on the scales, they can change the song, achieve the desired balance, and perhaps even emerge victorious in their battle with the vendor, who, with each missing gram, weakened the Soviet consumer’s fight against daily hardships.
