“Sarcophagus, Ghanaian Style, or The funeral of a Dreamer”

Curated by ANNA FRANTS

Among hosts of inevitable events stored for every one living, none is so mystifying in its essence than the phenonmenon of death. Most cultures have religious and philosphic systems, rituals, and certain principles of social order that facilitate the living to accept the death of their neighbors. For Ghanaians, death is by no means a mournful event, but a logical completion of one’s life’s journey. The funeral is a feast in honor of a well-lived life and the coffin plays a special symbolic role in cermeonies.
In SARCOPHAGUS, six Russian artists, including Ms. Frants take these Ghanaian concepts as inspiration and common starting point. The works are poetic, melancholy, mystical, and outlandish. The ambiance is that of a flickering dream, just about to end.
