St Petersburg Arts Project Presents “Interception. St Petersburg Improvisers Orchestra

The concert INTERCEPTION features the St. Petersburg Improvisers Orchestra performing live alongside real-time radio transmissions from police, fire, and emergency services. These broadcasts—intercepted and streamed online—will include live audio from departments in St. Petersburg, New York, Yekaterinburg, Los Angeles, Houston, and other cities around the world.

The St. Petersburg Improvisers Orchestra was founded in February 2012 at the Gallery of Experimental Sound in St. Petersburg. It remains the only improvising orchestra in Russia, though globally, similar ensembles exist in cities such as Glasgow, Berlin, Amsterdam, São Paulo, Warsaw, and Tokyo.

The term “improvisers orchestra” was first coined by Leonid Utyosov. While the musicians improvise, their performance also merges composition and improvisation, guided by a conductor. Unlike traditional symphonic or chamber orchestras, improvisers orchestras often include non-orchestral instruments, found objects, and electronics. Their conducting methods also differ from classical traditions, relying on a gesture-based symbolic language developed by conductors like Walter Thompson and Butch Morris.

Perfomers: Nikita Epifanov (double bass), Olga Krukovskaya (double bass), Mikhail Kuznetsov (cello), Diana Kapizova (vln.)Antonina Pozdniakova (vln), Mark Prishly (sax), Vladimir Luchansky (sax), Leonid Perevalov (bass clarinet), Konstantin Oganov (trumpet), Nikolay Maevsky (fl.), Maksim Pozin (fl.), Vladimir Grig (electronics), Salavat Safiullin (guitar), Nadezhda Pantina (mandoline), Christine Kazarian (harp), Dmitry Tykvin (objects), Aleksey Ivanov (drums, perc.).
