DRUMPAINTING is an interactive performance piece that translates live sound into dynamic visuals—bringing the concept of “color music” into the digital age. Developed by artists at the CYLAND Media Lab, this unique system invites participants to play a set of drums, generating visuals that respond in real time to each beat and rhythm.
Using specially designed software, every sound—no matter the tempo, volume, or complexity—is captured and transformed into corresponding images. The program assigns visuals to each note and allows for effects like color shifts, size changes, transparency, inversion, and layering across up to four separate channels. Whether the rhythm is polished or improvised, every performance results in a one-of-a-kind visual composition.
Installations of DRUMPAINTING have varied in scale, incorporating instruments from playful toy bongos to full professional drum kits. Regardless of the setup, the core experience remains the same: the audience becomes both musician and visual artist, composing spontaneous “visual melodies” with each strike.
