◆Cyland Hosted a Talk on Digital Authorship with Ascribe◆
Cyland MediaArtLab hosts an important talk on digital authorship with Masha McConaghy at the White Hall of the Taiga Space in St. Petersburg. Masha McConaghy is one of the founders of ascribe. It is a service for artists, galleries and collectors to register, transfer and archive digital art.
How should we understand ownership when digital data is so easily copied? What does it mean to possess a digital work when it can be instantly and globally shared online?
It turns out that the developers of hypertext interfaces foresaw these problems as early as the 1960s, but the solutions they proposed were difficult to implement at the time. By the early 1990s, the simplified WWW system had become widespread—its simplicity came at the cost of losing the concept of ownership. DRM, like watermarks before it, is unable to effectively prevent copyright infringement.
The service ascribe raises the question: can we redefine the concept of ownership on the internet? Can we create a web where copyrights are respected?
ascribe helps artists, photographers, and filmmakers register copyright for their works and store them in digital form. We invite everyone interested in learning more about storing, protecting, and transferring files online to attend our event.
