AND A VERY SPECIAL EXHIBITION

The Made in New York Media Center By IFP also exhibits the American premier of new work from Anna Frants, and a new media installation from Carla Gannis. Both exhibitions opened to the public on December 1st.

A Subject Self-Defined is a new body of work from Carla Gannis that addresses issues of branded identity; age and body estimation; catastrophe culture; and online agency via static, dynamic and interactive “selfie” imagery.

“The woman’s face has served as the muse of the male gaze throughout art history. Artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Frida Kahlo, and Cindy Sherman have subverted this idea of woman as figure, as a mere face, and as muse through self-portraiture. They called into question what happens when a woman turns the paintbrush and, in our contemporary times, the camera, to her own face. In A Subject Self-Defined, the viewer is provided multiple vantage points that traverse various forms of self-portraiture and mixed-media methodologies. Her series converges a wide array of technologies – drawing, painting, animation, social media, and augmented reality – together to serve as the artist herself re-represents herself.” – Dorothy Santos, 2016

Also on display from 12/1 – 12/9 is No. 0, a modular, 3D public art installation by Anna Frants. Conceptually referencing a computer grid and visually reflecting the infrastructure of a building sans walls – Frants builds an open framework room of hollow, polypropylene cubes. The exposed scaffolding houses objects, videos, and movements. The interior (unlived-in lived-in) space is empty for viewers to navigate the visuals, sounds, words, and virtual actions of the exterior matrix and formulate their own story.

For the 10th Annual CYFEST, CYLAND Media Art Lab is partnering with The Made in New York Media Center By IFP for a pioneering art::tech event.
