◆Paper Sculpture◆
A new exhibition at the Russian Museum presents over one hundred sculptural works made from paper. Among the 60 participating artists are sculptors, painters, graphic artists, and designers from St. Petersburg and Moscow. They work in various artistic styles and techniques, but are united by their use of paper as the main medium for their creativity. Some prefer working with plain drawing paper, others with newspaper or corrugated cardboard, using collage techniques, papier-mâché, and various color treatments.
Of particular interest are objects created using the “author’s paper” or paper casting technique — that is, paper handmade by the artist, often featuring diverse textures.
The central concept of the exhibition is to overcome the flat, two-dimensional nature of the paper sheet and give it sculptural volume and plasticity.
Unlike traditional sculpture materials such as metal or stone, paper is more malleable, allowing the artist to convey fleeting impressions and to represent elusive images or ideas. The motifs and themes are often suggested by the material itself — paper that carries its own history, function, and secrets.
