Re: Collection

The exhibition Re: Collection, celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York and opened the museum’s move to its building at 2 Columbus Circle, as well as the 16-year tenure of Chief Curator David McFadden.

The exhibition featured approximately 70 works from the museum’s permanent collection, acquired during McFadden’s time at MAD.

Among the exhibited pieces are sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, and textiles created by both renowned artists—such as Robert Arneson, Judy Chicago, and James Turrell—and contemporary designers including Sebastian Brajkovic and Jennifer Trask. Anna Frants’s work titled “Jumping Jacks”, from the series “Made In Greece”, could be seen on display.

The exhibition also reflected the thematic directions of McFadden’s previous curatorial projects, such as Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting, Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary, and Dead or Alive: Nature Becomes Art. It emphasized his focus on materials and creative processes as central elements in art and design.

Re: Collection serves not only as a retrospective of McFadden’s curatorial work but also as a demonstration of how the MAD collection evolved under his leadership—from 800 objects to more than 3,000, with approximately 730 of them acquired in just the last five years.
