Snow-Covered Cartoons

Winter exhibition project — “Cartoons Covered in Snow” presents 25 outstanding animated films and notable contemporary artworks inspired by snow, which come together as a single art attraction for hyperactive children, rebellious teenagers, whimsical hipsters, young mothers, and lonely businessmen…

Snow has always symbolized purity, transformation, and festive sparkle. It inspires artists to create masterpieces—whether tragic or lighthearted—united by the calming power of a snowy blanket. Animation and contemporary art explore the mythological nature of snow and reinterpret it in new contexts. The exhibition “Cartoons Covered in Snow” is conceived as a snow-art machine—a living, interactive space where a dialogue unfolds between people who may, for the first time, begin to reflect on snow as a metaphor for both the meaning and futility of existence, and art that has long been frozen within it.

All three gallery spaces will be filled with a curated collection of the best animated films from the USSR, Russia, and around the world—ranging from popular favorites to rare gems. Highlights include Alexander Tatarsky’s The Last Year’s Snow Was Falling and Roman Kachanov’s The Mitten, standing alongside the timeless Betty Boop and Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies. Also featured are fresh debuts from animation festivals held in 2012.
